Mennonite Church WORSHIP Worship is our response to God's invitation to dwell in God's presence. When we gather, we worship through prayer, music, giving, scripture, silence, and proclamation. Through these various acts of worship we also open ourselves to God's dwelling in us. Worship Services: Sunday Morning Worship:
9:15 - 10:30 AM*
Sunday Morning Worship: The Sunday Morning Worship service includes scriptural readings, prayer, singing, special music, sermons, sharing, and children's lessons. These various activities help to draw us closer to God and to better discern God's plan for our lives. Sunday School Hour: The Sunday School Hour offers classes for everyone above 2 years of age. Bible stories and current issues are discussed as to how they apply to our lives. Adult Sunday School Classes: After the Sunday worship service, there are many Sunday School classes to choose from for the adults:
Sunday School classes meet for approximately 1 hour after the worship service. These classes also normally meet once a month outside the Sunday School Hour to build community, interacting together in worship, prayer, and social activities. Children's Sunday School Classes: There are also Sunday School classes designed for the youth above 2 years of age. These classes are broken down by the child's grade in school. Sunday Evening Worship: The Sunday Evening Worship service is an informal time designed for worship though Bible teachings, sharing, and singing to promote spiritual growth. For children ages 2 through 4th grade, the Joy Bunch meets bi-monthly during the Sunday Evening Worship service. Joy Bunch gives children the opportunity to enjoy and participate in crafts, Bible stories, games, and singing. These activities enable children to experience God's grace in their lives. MISSION New life in Christ Jesus transforms our life-style and becomes the mirror of God's purpose. Because of the compassion Jesus has shown to us we reach out to the downtrodden. Lockport provides avenues of common involvement to keep Christ's life and ministry alive in our community and world. This objective is fulfilled through quilting, making blankets, rolling bandages, and other sewing projects. Meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 9:00 AM. A nursery is provided. Professional Business Women: A group of area-wide business women meet for a time of inspiration and fellowship in a Christian atmosphere, enabling them to discern their full potential in Christ and in meeting the needs of people. The churches participating are North Clinton, West Clinton, Central, Zion, Tedrow & Lockport. We take turns hosting at our own church. The home schoolers also have a team. About the 3rd week of March, we have a mini tournament for this area. The last week of March, the Invitational Tournament is with Lancaster, PA & Wayne Co, OH areas. We have a 3 year rotation of taking turns for hosting the tournament. The meets are every Sunday - either afternoon or evening. Last year, we had 11 teams (about 65 quizzers). Our goal is to study & learn more about the Bible in a fun atmosphere with friends. This also encourages mingling among other church youth groups. Junior Choir: When a choir director is available, they meet between Sept. and May. Grades 4-8 can participate. DOCTRINE -- WHAT WE BELIEVE At the core of the Mennonite Church is a belief in Jesus Christ. We believe in Jesus Christ as God's special and divine revelation for all humanity. Jesus is the model for life. He died and rose from the dead in order that people could live in union with God. We believe the church should keep Christ's life and ministry alive in the world; thus we are "the body of Christ." The Bible is Central: "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness." We believe that God's "Holy Spirit" helps the community of believers understand that Word. The "Holy Spirit" uses the written word to give new life to the church and to help people grow in faith. New Life in Christ: We all sin. We commit wrongs. We do things we should not, and we are out of touch with God. In history, God sent Jesus Christ into the world so that all those who believe in Him can receive forgiveness for all their sins, as well as the gift of whole life today and the promise of living forever with God. Voluntary Membership and Commitment to Christ: We believe Jesus Christ taught adult repentance and that when the church's members experience God's love and are wholeheartedly committed to its purposes, the church is strongest. For that reason, "believer's baptism" is practiced. This symbolizes the decision of an adult to make a public commitment to live as Christ's disciple. Evangelism: We believe Jesus Christ commissioned all believers to go into the world and share the "Good News" of the Gospel. This includes all persons throughout the world. Jesus wants his followers to help each other and minister to every human need. We believe it is important to be concerned for both the "spiritual" and the "physical" aspects of life. Community: We believe in community -- that is, we belong to each other. "In Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others" (Romans 12:5). We need each other for encouragement, accountability, and growth in a supportive and caring way. We need each other in moments of crisis. Church growth is dependent upon its corporate faith, unity, service, and witness as exercised in community. Jesus' Teachings: We belive we are called to be Christ's disciples. This means we take Jesus' words as recorded in scripture as authoritative for life. As disciples of Jesus we try to live under Christ's rule. For many of us, this means loving the enemy and refusing to use violence or participating in military service, living peaceably with others at all levels, serving the poor and needy, working for justice and mercy. |
