KOZLOV, FEDOROV, LARIONOV TERRORIZE OPPOSITION

WINGS vs. CANUCKS

YZERMAN SCORES TWICE AS WINGS CLINCH CENTRAL DIVISION

The Vancouver Canucks came out playing hard, but like most teams lately, they came away with nothing. They took a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a goal by Murray Barron, but that was all she wrote for the 'Nucks. Holmstrom (Yzerman, Shanahan) answered back to make it 1-1, and then Kozlov (Fedorov, Larionov) rounded out the scoring in the first on his 28th goal of the season.
The Captain scored from Larionov and Lidstrom at the 1:08 mark of the middle period to make it 3-1 Detroit. Then the penalties began. Chelios, his first penalty as a Wing, was called for cross-checking and just as his penalty was set to expire, Fedorov and Lidstrom were both called for penalties. Lidstrom's was a double minor for high sticking. His stick, however, never touched Mogilny's face... it was the puck. The Canucks could do nothing but watch the Wings put on a penalty-killing clinic for most of their six minutes of power play time. Brendan Shanahan was outstanding on the kill, doing everything but scoring short-handed.
The third period was all Wings. Yzerman (Chelios, Lidstrom), Fedorov (Brown, Clark), and Shanahan (Holmstrom, Macoun) all tallied for Detroit for a final score of 6-1. Shanahan has 31 goals on the season, and Steve Yzerman is at 29. The Captain is also closing in on the 600 goal mark, currently at 592.

WINGS vs. BLUES

The Detroit Red Wings face off against the St. Louis Blues on Friday, April 9, 1999 at the Kiel Center in St. Louis. The Wings are in search of their 9th straight victory. Should they reach that goal, they will have tied their longest winning streak since March of 1996. St. Louis is fighting for position in the playoffs and will not be any easy team to beat. This could be a preview of the first round match-up.

Playoffs coming on April 21!!!!

HOCKEYTOWN'S HERO: BRENDAN SHANAHAN

Brendan Shanahan is one of the few guys in the National Hockey League who can score goals with the best and fight with the rest. After leading the team with 28 goals last season, Shanny remarked that he was disappointed with that and wanted to get back to his game. After going through a scoring slump earlier this season, Shanny has bounced back and has scored 31 goals on the season. His slapshot is lethal when he sets up in the top corner of the face-off circle, his favorite spot. Shanahan has been absolutely incredible lately... he's doing everything. Power play, penalty kill, even strength. He's really on his game right now, and we all hope he keeps it up throughout the playoffs! Because Shanny has had such a great start to the season, he is Hockeytown's Hero.
